USGS Activities at Point Reyes NRA: Giacomini Field Work

10 meter high weather station being set up by USGS employees
10 meter high weather station being set up by USGS employees. Visible are the atomometers at 1m, 2m, 4m and 8m. These are what measure the wind speeds at various heights

A weather station and water level-gauge were installed on the levee adjacent to Lagunitas Creek, which flows through the Giacomini Property to Tomales Bay. The weather station consists of sensors for wind speed and direction at 1 meters, 2 meters, 4 meters, and 8 meters from the ground on a 10 m pole. The station also has sensors to measure atmospheric pressure, temperature, and rainfall. The water-level gauge measures the water level, a function of the height of the tide, creek input, and wind-driven water influx through pressure. A flexible tube was run from the weather station to the creek and affixed to a pipe driven into the creek bottom. The pressure necessary to force a bubble of air out the end of the tube indicates its depth from the surface. Using that pressure data the variations in tide height may be monitored and compared to other data. Another water level guage was installed on a pier down Tomales Bay, midway between the first weather station and the mouth of the bay. Data from these stations and sensors will be collected by the National Park Service and U.S. Geological Survey employees. Tidal range and the effects of recorded wind speeds will be used to prediction responses in the environment to changing weather patterns and possible levee removal.
