Basin-Framework Investigations


USGS Research in the Los Angeles Basin region has focused on:
  • Gravity and rock-density investigations of the deep Los Angeles Basin with emphasis on density/porosity models of the basin sedimentary fill in relation to the seismic response to strong earthquakes;
  • Strontium-isotope studies of shelly fossils and radiometric-isotope studies of volcanic rocks for geochronologic control on Basin events;
  • Paleontologic studies of fossil foraminifers and mollusks;
  • Paleomagnetic studies to determine age of sedimentary and volcanogenic sequences
