Geology of the Mojave Desert Province

Geologic Framework of the Lucerne Valley Region

The USGS has been involved in geologic-mapping and subsurface investigations that will clarify the geologic setting and geologic history of the Lucerne Valley region and the adjacent northern front of the San Bernardino Mountains. Investigations include:
  • geologic mapping of Quaternary thrust faults and associated right-lateral strike-slip faults along the north-central front of the San Bernardino Mountains;
  • analysis of the stratigraphy and depositional history of sedimentary deposits on the High Desert.
These studies largely are conducted to determine geologic controls on ground-water resources for expanding High Desert communities.
