Earthquake Activities in Southern California

U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Investigations

The USGS sponsors a wide range of investigations into the causes, occurrences, and history of earthquakes in the southern California region. The research emphasizes the identification of earthquake-related hazards and ways to estimate earthquake risk and earthquake recurrence. These studies are sponsored by the USGS Southern California Earthquake Program. Together with cooperating institutions, this program performs fundamental seismologic research and conducts earthquake monitoring for the region using seismic and GPS networks and other strain-monitoring techniques.
