Earthquake Activities in Southern California

U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Investigations

The USGS sponsors a wide range of investigations into the causes, occurrences, and history of earthquakes in the southern California region. The research emphasizes the identification of earthquake-related hazards and ways to estimate earthquake risk and earthquake recurrence. These studies are sponsored by the USGS Southern California Earthquake Program. Together with cooperating institutions, this program performs fundamental seismologic research and conducts earthquake monitoring for the region using seismic and GPS networks and other strain-monitoring techniques.

The California Geological Survey (CGS) conducts earthquake investigations that lead to a variety of products, including:

Southern California Earthquake Data Center

Southern California Earthquake Data Center - The Data Center Page of the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC), a consortium of University, Federal, and State geoscience groups that conducts research on the character, origin, mechanisms, and hazards of earthquakes in southern California; the linked sites also contain information about the history of southern California earthquakes in the recent geologic past.

The SCEC Data-Center website has many useful links that describe earthquake activity and earthquake geology in southern California. Among these are:
