Surficial geology mapping base: Construction of a 3D geologic model begins with field mapping. The modern geologic map of the San Francisco Bay region was compiled over decades of field mapping and associated research. Much of the original mapping was completed well before modern digital mapping and modeling software became available. Regional mapping was conducted independently and in collaboration with Federal, State, academic, and individuals working with public utilities providing regional water and energy, and constructing highways, tunnels, bridges, buildings, and other regional infrastructure.
