Construction a 3D/4D geologic model: The 3D/4D mapping of the San Andreas Fault Zone Project is developing techniques to construct three-dimensional geologic maps that retain all the information of traditional geologic maps while providing a more detailed picture of the subsurface. The 4th dimension (4D) component is to manipulated the data to show how the landscape and the structure of the earth has changed over time. The following web pages show how a 3D/4D model is constructed.

The following web pages illustrate how data from a myriad of sources are combined and manipulated into a working 3D model of the San Francisco Bay region. This preliminary USGS research has been completed, but the model is being updated and extended to include the San Andreas Fault Zone in regions north and south of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Click on each of the smaller images to see datasets of surficial geology, gravity and magnetic field measurements, topography, and examples of a geologic 3D model.
