Lava flow trail stop 11

Life Among the Lava Flows

Food and shelter

Once plants become established on a new lava flow, animals begin to return. At first, just a few migrants travel through to garner what morsels of food they can. Eventually, pockets of vegetation grow large enough to support year-round or seasonal residents, like the Steller's jay, Abert's squirrel, and Eastern fence lizard.
