STOP 7: Lake Dawn

Lake Dawn is a man-made lake scooped in Pleistocene gravels and sands that fill a gentle depression between steep hills of basalt.

In similar Pleistocene deposits east of Port Angeles a mastodon skeleton was recovered; the forest-dwelling hairy elephant, relative of the mammoth, once roamed the Olympic Peninsula (fig. FT 15).
