Paleosecular Variation

Paleosecular variation (PSV) curve for Hawaii for the last 3,700 years. Each open circle denotes a mean virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) calculated from a group of lava flows yielding the 14C age indicated. Note the very rapid changes between 1257 and 975 B.P. and the very slow secular variation that occurred between 747 and 238 B.P.
