Richard R. Doell

Richard R. Doell died March 6th at age 85 following a period of extended illness. Richard was a geophysicist in the Geological Division in Menlo Park from 1959 to 1979 where he specialized in studies of the earth’s magnetic field and remnant magnetism in rocks. His pioneering research on development of a paleomagnetic time scale from magnetic reversals in dated rocks (with co-workers Allan Cox and G. Brent Dalrymple) was a major component of the plate tectonics revolution. For his scientific contributions, Richard Doell was awarded the most prestigious prize in Earth Science, the Vetlesen Prize, and he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
