TASK 7 - Public outreach for National ParksStatement of Problem: task supports the development of products on USGS geologic research in the national parks. In the past it has also focused on the development of general websites about the geology of national parks, with a particular focus on the Colorado River parks. For 2011-2013, the focus of this task will be the development of a book commemorating USGS geologic research and major scientific findings in the National Parks, to commemorate the 2016 NPS Centennial. Objectives: The original goal of this task was to provide web information on the geology of national parks with a focus on Lake Mead and Grand Canyon Region. In its initial phase, the task was structured toward providing general purpose information for the public. An extensive website was created highlighting key geologic features in more than 60 parks. It includes general public websites focused on some geologic highlights of Grand Canyon NP, Lake Mead NRA, Glen Canyon NRA, and others in the Colorado Plateau region. For the remainder of the project, this task will fund the updating of the project website and creation of products that (1) highlight the geologic maps and research findings of project members in each mapping task; (2) highlight DOI and other federal partnerships, state partnerships, and outcomes (uses of our products). The goal will be to create information about this project’s research useful for briefings to resource managers, federal and state agencies, OMB, Congress, and the public. |
